My personal opinion is that paying big money to a QB is not the best route to winning the Superbowl. Since the turn of the century, Mahomes is the only QB that managed to win a Superbowl while being paid on a mega deal. Brady won 3 on his rookie deal and then famously played way below market value in subsequent superbowl years. Roethlesburger won two on his rookie deal and never won again. Peyton Manning won one on his rookie deal and didn't win again until he went to the Broncos at the end of his career for less than top tier money. Eli Manning won his two superbowls on his rookie deal and never won again. Drew Brees Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson all won a superbowls on their rookie deals and never won again. Meanwhile we have guys like Matthew Stafford, Nick Foles, Joe Flacco, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer all winning superbowls making well under elite QB money.
I completely agree, and that was the debate many years ago when Russ wanted #1 money. I was one saying I wonder which QB besides Brady was going to understand this? You'd think it would have been another guy with a wife that makes a shit ton of money. Russ didn't get it. And he hasn't played in a Championship since, and has only won a playoff game because he played a Lions team that was terrible, someone else that had a third string QB with broken ribs, and the Vikings missed like a 19 yard FG!

Geno Smith is due to take up 38.5 Million in cap space next season. That is just insane in my opinion. I think they would be better off using that money to fix the O-line and upgrade in other areas of weakness. I honestly think that they could build the roster to the point where it almost doesn't matter who the QB is. Then you can go out and either draft someone like they did with Wilson or sign a capable QB that has been written off because they were in a bad situation.
I agree. But I don't think they will. Hell, they might tag Geno and draft someone, hoping for a bridge year. But draft who? It seems like thin pickings.

COllege coaches are in 'win now' mode for job security - with your QB likely leaving for a better deal after one season - there is NO value in grooming them to learn the pocket game - just 'win now' baby is the new mantra.
Look at the best offenses right now. Even Burrow is pretty mobile. Not really a runner, but sure does move around in the pocket. The announcers were going on and on the other day about how Atlanta can now use the boot game because they had Penix and not Cousins and his surgically repaired achiles. I'm not sure Mobile QBs are the problem, but I completely agree with you that the college game is shit and it can't help but trickle down to the Pro game.

If you put a good enough team around a QB just about anyone can look Good. Brock Purdy looked great as a rookie with that juggernaut around him. fast forward a couple of years and there are some players lost to FA and some injuries and he looks average at best. Matthew Stafford couldn't do jack in Detroit stick him on a stacked Rams team and He looks like the greatest QB ever. The Rams then sign him to a mega extension and lose other guys due to the salary cap and he comes right back down to earth again. Look at Sam Darnold. He was basically written off but put him on a stacked team like the Vikings and he looks great.

They would save $25 mil by cutting him

He's a legitimate target isn't he?

Might not cost a huge amount since he is unproven. Would be like drafting him with our current first round pick plus may given then a 3rd or 4th rounder to make up for the difference in draft position. We will have the 16th or 18th pick depending on what happens Sunday.

If we win Sunday it would be precisely our 1st AND second round pick if we believe he is worth a #10 pick where he was drafted.

Seems like a lot but I guess it be a function of what is available in the draft

Adam Schefter a few days ago
“Do I think teams will explore that option that you just raised here already? Of course. Absolutely, 100 percent, because JJ McCarthy would have been a top — if not the top — quarterback prospect in this draft,” Schefter said. “And yes he’s coming off the ACL, so what, it doesn’t really matter. If the Vikings decided that they wanted to trade him, which I don’t know that they will, I believe they would get back everything that they put into him and then some. It would be a (first-round pick) and then some.”

Wow I missed the ACL. During Preseason?
