This is what the Mariners are and what we expected them to be - a .500 team. Of their (supposedly) best five hitters, two are batting below .200, another is batting .217, and one is expected to miss most of the season.
So, one should conclude the hitting can only improve, right? Wrong. And with Kirby and Brash returning soon the pitching can only get better? To me, it appears that Gilbert and Woo are the only starters that can be relied on since Miller and Kirby may see reduced pitch counts all season and Castillo is trending in the wrong direction. And there's no guarantee Brash will be his former self or not blow out his elbow again.

I don't know if it will get worse... that would be surprising.

What I do know is that they are once again in a situation where they will have to DFA Jerry's free agent signings and will likely do so way late when the damage has already been inflicted.

We'll see if they're smart enough to give up on Solano and Tellez before they have another Wong and Pollock on their hands.

On June 21st 2023 Wong's OPS fell to .423. He was allowed to remain on the roster another month and a half until July 30th when he FINALLY was DFAd on July 30th. PATHETIC

On May 13th AJ Pollock was hitting .130 with a .543 OPS. He remained on the roster for well over TWO more months when he was Finally DFAd on July 21st with a .547 OPS.

The M's barely missed the playoffs because Jerry refused to admit two of his key moves were absolute busts. How long with they hold on to Tellez and Solano???

Apparently Miller was surprised about getting pulled after 78 pitches yesterday. Says he felt good and wanted to come back out for the 6th inning. But apparently it had already been decided several days ago that they would have him on a "reduced" pitch count which is probably why Castillo was left in the game Tuesday after it was clear he couldn't locate his pitches. They wanted to save the bullpen.

FWIW this season the Mariners have posted an OPS+ of 109 (fifth in the league) and an ERA+ of 96 (12th in the AL):

Really really hope Hancock pitches like he did in Tacoma today. Another series win would be huge!!!

To nobody's surprise, Julio strikes out.

Okay, line drives to the warning track in right field should never be caught, that's bullshit. Dirt bath for Fraley when he comes up.

And then Arozarena whiffs on a hanging mistake meatball. Hope the next eight innings go a lot better.
