Probably not what you want long haul for 1B but he's not the worst player on the roster.

Rowdy would great as a backup 1st baseman and situational pinch hitter. Unfortunately, in this lineup he's the best option and compared to Solano he looks like Lou Gehrig.

Mastrobuoni's position does matter, his position is utility player, that's a viable position and an important one. So on the opening day roster Mastrobuoni and Moore were utility, but since then they have lost their second and third basemen, that's what they are trying to cover, both starters and depth, that to me is why they are carrying three utility players. I think that is what needs to be taken into account. There's different ways it could be looked at but I think you need to take into account the positions Mastrobuoni was covering when looking to replace himSeattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 3:52 amYes, but again, I have a fundamental disagreement that his positional versatility makes up for being one of the worst hitters in baseball.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 3:45 amI didn't say I did but we needed to assign him a position ai thought so you could replace him
His “position” doesn’t matter. Formulate a team where your best players see the field, even if that means you don’t move them around.
They can do it very easily, as I’ve laid out.

It doesn't matter when he's hitting to a 50 OPS+.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 5:00 amMastrobuoni's position does matter, his position is utility player, that's a viable position and an important one. He isn't valuable at that point which is why he's been worth -0.4 bWAR (probably -0.5 bWAR after today).
I understand why they called him up. That is not an excuse to keep him up or to keep rolling with the same stupid strategy.
There is no way you can convince me that the M's would not currently be a better team with Canzone in right, Moore at 3B, Rivas at 2B and Mastroboner off the roster.

It isn't about rotating players around it's about covering positions for injuries. You think Mastrobuoni is a shitty hitter, okay. But you need to take into account the positions that need covering. You can't just replace him with a right fielder and call it good because he's a better hitter

Sure you can.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 5:19 amIt isn't about rotating players around it's about covering positions for injuries. You think Mastrobuoni is a shitty hitter, okay. What's the worst that can happen? Someone gets injured and you just call up someone again to replace him.
You don't play bad players because an injury might happen.
And I am taking account the positions that need playing. Moore plays 3B. Rivas plays 2B. Canzone plays right field. There's all the positions Mastroboner plays covered. If an injury happens... you figure it out...

Agreed, they should just let their 9 best players play.Seattle or Bust wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 5:25 amSure you can.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 5:19 amIt isn't about rotating players around it's about covering positions for injuries. Plus that mix gives them the L/R/L/R/L/R/L/R/L- or at least close enough- that they don't need to pinch hit all the time. Just let them play every day. Platoons are a losing strategy.

Mariners win! We're HEROES!!!
Two runs in two games allowed by Evans and Hancock. Who the hell saw that coming.

It's been the X—factor this season, getting good performances that we didn't expect.DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Sun May 18, 2025 6:16 amMariners win! We're HEROES!!!

A's far as platoons go: It's such a flawed concept, because they're not going to pay for two good players at a position. They pay for two average players, and if one sucks, then you've just got a bum playing whenever there's a particular-armed pitcher.
I'd rather one good player who might have trouble against lefties and a long-shot type backup (like a AAA Locklear type).

I could probably look it up somewhere, but one of you will know. Is Rowdy a worse hitter against lefties than Solano? It seems like Wilson's obsessed with righty/lefty platoons, no matter how bad one half of the platoon may be.
