Make America Healthy Again (MAHA)

Post by gil » Sun Jun 01, 2025 3:47 pm

From what I am reading there are 4 major targets of Secretary RFK Jr.'s policies:
Ultraprocessed foods
Seed oils
Glyphosate and other herbicides and pesticides
Fluoridated water

There's a new film (I have not watched) addressing these:

How do people feel about this? I'm onboard personally. I do my best to eat whole foods with no chemicals. (One rule of thumb for me: If you couldn't make it in your kitchen, you probable shouldn't eat it.) I have chlorine and fluoride filters for my drinking and cooking water.

I think RFK is doing a great job.

If other countries have already made using some of these products illegal, why haven't we?

There are two things that I'm aware of (and honestly, I'm surprised they made it to the top of Kennedy's list of unhealthy things). One is that they are highly processed, usually with industrial chemicals. (E.g., you don't easily get oil out of grape seeds.)

The second, and more concerning thing for me, is that most seed oils contain a lot of omega-6 fatty acids. We need a balance between omega-3 and omega-6, and most of us get too much omega-6, relatively speaking.

Good question. I think other countries are much more cautious when it comes to food safety. We allow food companies to add a lot of things to our food under the "Generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) category. From what I read, while the FDA is supposed to regulate food safety (including allowable ingredients) the food manufacturers can determine what ingredients (such as colorings, preservatives, flavoring, and other additives) are GRAS.

A big question for me is whether Kennedy will propose regulations for this, or focus on a public information campaign. Or maybe arm twisting with manufacturers to make our food healthier.

Seriously? They are among the most inflammatory chemicals you can put in your body. Literally - some of these oils originated as engine lubricants - and you're now putting that in your body because RJR Nabisco bribed the FDA to legalize it. They are utterly toxic. Only use stuff like extra virgin olive oil and for higher cooking temps use avocado oil. If you are using wesson-type oils you are literally poisoning yourself. It's 2025 - this shit is common knowledge. Would you cook with valvoline? Well, that is literally what you are doing. Remember that when you eat out - and imagine what low-grade oils fast food uses - the worst of the worst. That's why people that eat that shit are sick - and throw in the 60 ounce coke with 200 grams of sugar for the kill.

Next up - go research the yellow food dye - when you find out what it is you'll probably dry heave it's so gross.

Thanks for the info. I don't do much cooking with oils, although i consume raw olive oil in antipastos that i enjoy. I do eat food cooked in canola occasionally though and butter as well so guilty as charged.

Butter is pretty natural, so I think it's better than trans fats, hydrogenated oils, and seed oils.

One challenge with eliminating seed oils is that they are not just in the oil *we* use for cooking. When we eat restaurant or take out food, we eat the oils that they cook with. Also, seed oils are in all sorts of prepared, packaged foods. Read the labels.
