M's Need Pitching more than Hitting

Post by Captain 97 » Mon Jul 21, 2025 4:54 pm

We have been living in the realm of great pitching and no hitting for so long that everyone's gut instinct is that we need to add bats. However if you look at things its been the offense carrying this team this year and the pitching has been mid at best.

Current MLB team Ranking in hitting categories.
Runs 8th
OPS 6th
WRC+ 5th
OPS+ 4th

Current MLB team Ranking in pitching categories.
FIP 17th
ERA16th
ERA+ 24th

I think the M's need to throw most of their trade deadline resources at the bullpen and maybe even look at bringing in a rental starter if we can't get the health of the rotation sorted out. If we have enough left over to pick up a good bat fine but its going to be the pitching that will make or break this season.

It's unbelievable that Jerry thought he had a major league bullpen going into this season, especially with uncertainty about how Brash would perform once he returned.

The nice thing about modern baseball is now it would be impossible for us to make a dumb trade like Jose Cruz Jr. for Mike Timidlin and Paul Sploojaric or an even dumber trade like Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe for Healthcliff Scrotumb.

Scrotumb had a WHIP of 1.971 in 46 innings with the Red Sux when we acquired him. Imagine if Mariner management had been armed with that knowledge. All they saw was 17 saves plus another 63 over the prior two years even though his WHIP was about 1.500. Now if we were to trade young talent we wouldn't do it for Scrotumb-types.

Slocumb posted a 1.447 WHIP for the M's in 97 after the trade. The sad thing is that there were 15 pitchers that posted worse WHIPS than that for the M's that year.

When you think about it it doesn't matter if you add to offense or pitching what matters is you get the greatest incremental improvement over what you have now. And that is Gino over Williamson by far

In regards to starter you're not going to find somebody significantly better than Logan Evans. And we all know relievers are the least valuable guys on the roster. So I am all for improving the bullpen but you got to get Gino otherwise it's a fail of a trade deadline

I've been saying this since the first few weeks of the season, that pitching is the greater need.

Do we get any production from Santos when his knee is healthy?

We need some bullpen help, but we also need at least 1 more bat. I don’t think you can upgrade the 5th pitcher significantly from Evans/Hancock/miller without giving significant prospects. Trade for Geno and 2 bullpen arms and I think that’s a good deadline.
