Yes, I'm well aware of what he did last season. What exactly does that have to do with last night? Are you seriously operating under the assumption that because you did it once, it's a good bet that the next time you'll do it again? You know that's not how baseball works, don't you?

You really can't stop yourself, can you?
I just thought it was funny. That's the kind of player he is. If you want to call letting him swing away bad situational baseball, okay. I never said it was smart situational baseball. I said i would let him do it. Arozarena is an aggressive player, if i was managing him I'd leave him alone. Generally speaking i wouldn't try to rein in aggressiveness. It's like that with Julio, another aggressive player. You're not happy with that situation. You would like more control over a player, I would be less.

I asked google and tossed Lou in...
Traditional Approach:
The traditional approach, especially in earlier eras of baseball, was to take the 3-0 pitch and walk to first base.
Piniella's Philosophy:
While Piniella likely respected this tradition, he also believed in a more aggressive approach at the plate, particularly with certain hitters and game situations. He wouldn't necessarily forbid a swing, but would expect the hitter to be selective.
Modern Perspective:
In modern baseball, there's more debate about whether or not to swing on a 3-0 count. Some argue that hitters should be aggressive and look for a good pitch to hit, while others maintain the traditional approach of taking the walk.
Piniella's Aggressiveness:
Piniella was known for his fiery personality and aggressive managing style. This might have translated to a willingness to let his hitters be more aggressive in certain situations, even with a 3-0 count.

In a situation like that, the third-base coach would give you the sign to swing away or take, it's not left up to the player. You'll note that in the video from last year Arozarena looks for the sign on 3-0 and probably got "swing away" although to be fair you can't tell.

If they were down a run or you needed one to take the lead I'd be more conservative but I don't mind going for the throat when you already have a lead. He has a 1.294 OPS for his career with a 3-0 Count.
