JS extends JSN

Post by auroraave » Mon Mar 23, 2026 1:34 pm

Schefter just reported JSN signed $168 million dollar extension. Not seeing it reported anywhere else but I got an ESPN alert so it's gotta be true, right? $40-plus million a year - curious what the annual cap hit is gonna be. Looks like $120 guaranteed. Also hearing he's extending Bradford to the same deal. Ok, that's a joke.

I'd call that making a statement, JSN gets exactly what he was asking for, the highest paid NFL WR.

I was thinking the other day about Shaheed and Walker and whatever. It occurred to me the guy being left out was Darnold. He's extension is coming due next season. He's not coming cheap, that's been factored in to this plan as well

What this is about are explosive plays. They are the homeruns of NFL offenses, you scheme for them and you pay for them. I looked at the chiefs. My analysis is ridiculously simple but they really don't have squat invested in WRs. They also seemed to have been fairly mediocre generating explosive plays. I feel I can see the reasoning for signing Walker. An attempt to generate explosive plays

The seahawks on the other hand have been good at generating explosive plays. Walker was a big part of that but they decided to move on from him. But that doesn't mean they aren't willing to invest big-time in explosive play generators. What's interesting about it is it being WRs instead of RBs. Again, there's reasons for that terms of ability to stay on the field or whatever

My point is, follow the money. I'll be surprised with the money they are going to be investing in JSN, Shaheed and Darnold that the offense continues to be a 50/50 spit. We shall see but that really doesn't even make sense to me at this point

Interesting, last season all the experts figured it naturally make sense to extend Geno and DK but JS didn't do that. He zigged when they thought he should zag. He sure as heck stepped up to the plate this time didn't he. That's what I really admire about the guy. Not that he's always right, but he's got the balls to deal with either situation decisively

- draft good young players that you don't have to pay
- supplement with decent but not high end free agents
- win a super bowl
- sign your young players to massive extensions
- no longer able to afford decent depth pieces
- never make it back to the super bowl
- trade off veteran pieces and rebuild
- rinse repeat.

Trying to keep the band together seldom works.

I think I'd rather shoot my wad and see if I could get 2 or 3 superbowls rather than go through another prolonged period of gradual decline like we experienced from 2015-2023.

I kind of feel like a better move may have been just to go all in for the next couple of years and then let everyone walk.
Let JSN and Witherspoon and Darnold play out their contracts maybe franchise JSN for a year. Trade off your draft picks for impact vets and spend all of your available cap space on free agents rather than allocating for extensions.

I was thinking it too. Winning a SB is hard as fuck. Why not double down to repeat and longer future be dammed?
We've seen team do what they call "all in". Half the time those teams don't have the organization and fundamental young
talent the Seahawks had after this SB. If you can get one more, do it.

But oh well. That's not what they are doing. I like JSN and Spoon a lot and JS has done great - so I'll mostly shut up now...
They could still win the SB again...

I couldn't remember if Puka had signed an extension or not. Would have almost been better if he had, and we gave JSN just a little more. Imagine how salty Puka would have been about that!

That's the thing, this wasn't about letting the market dictate. This was making JSN happy, and with a quickness. I read JS the other day compare the Walker situation to how people got worried over the Online. That was his, you can find guys comment. This is pretty much the opposite isn't it? Whatever it is, JS doesn't lose sleep over it.

JS might not want to get too cocky about the O Line. He had some REALLY bad O Lines doing it his way.
