The only way they would trade for Chapman is if the Giants covered a significant portion of that contract.
Yeah, Chapman looks like toast at this point and Dipoto isn't going to complicate his roster like that. That be a Cashman move, not a dipoto one. It would attempt to address a couple of issues. That article is more aimed at shoring up their defense but their hitting against left handers is terrible as well. Reysnyder gets the heat but a bigger issue might be Cal. That right handed production is missing now.

I don't know what you can do about it at this point. You're not going to be able to be too choosy about a bat if anyone is available. You can let Raley hit lefties but I'm not sure that's the answer.

On a surface level, the Mariners look impressive in entering Tuesday's action having allowed the seventh-fewest runs in the majors. However, this hasn't been helped by a defense that has suffered repeated lapses and ranks 27th with a horrendous -10.2 defensive fWAR. As such, the latest trade speculation is something which should interest the fanbase, as a way to strengthen one of the weakest defensive positions but also not rush the future
An article on trading for Matt Chapman. With four more years at $25 mil seems unlikely. The Giants might be a more likely trading partner than the Astros though I don't see the mariners in the market for bloated contracts. They could use a 3rd baseman next season. Emerson at SS, Donovan in left field. And it could be a nice spark for this season. There's your right handed bat. I'm beginning to warm to the idea. Trade Castillo for him

Absolutely moronic impossible idea. Donovan is our 3B until next season when Celesten is ready then Donovan to UT. Castillo is "Only" owed ~$40M. Chapman is owed almost $120M for a .600 OPS. What exactly are you going to do with Randy, a guy that is actually hitting????

They still wouldn't do it. Trading for him makes trading for Marte seem like the best trade in M's history.

Raley had almost an .750 OPS in 2023 when the Rays let him hit Lefties but brilliant Jerry decided he couldn't do that so he hasn't been good against them while here because he rarely faces them. Just shocking self fulfilling prophecy. Maybe just maybe if the let him hit lefties full time he might put up even better numbers than Ref's .116/.456 this season. AND he would be available in the 8th and 9th innings to face RH relievers.

There you go trying to apply logic to Jerry Dipoto's thought process. Not going to happen.

Raley went 11-41 against lefties in 2023. Career, in 178 at bats he's 180/.246/.281. I just find it hard to believe that it's all just in dipoto's head. Given the chance Raley is going to rake against lefties. It be great if true but the thing is you have to give him the at bats to find out. I would rather not use this season to test the theory

Yep stick with Refsnyder who is 5 for 43 vs. Lefties and has a .473 OPS vs Right handers. Having him face RH relievers in high leverage situations late in the games with Raley and his .938 OPS vs righties on the bench is total 4 D Chess.

I'm saying as a team, the mariners are hitting .199/.283/
.328 against lefties this season. That seems like something that could be improved on to me. I'm not comfortable with the solution being a left hander who's hitting. 180 lifetime against lefties.
