I hate to have this attitude, but he will just be the next AAAA stud that we refuse to part with because somehow, losing with Home Grown talent is better than winning with guys that you didn't draft and develop.

Re: I fear Julio is forever ruined...
This is just who he is. lackluster first halves and good second halves.
For his career he is at .258/.317/.419 with an 87 OPS+ in the first half. This year he is at .247/.308/.423 with 14 HR and an 107 OPS+
Last year he was at .252/.313/.417 with 14 HR and a 104 OPS+ in the first half and then had a 145 OPS+ in the second half.

It makes me sad that the Mariners took what was a guy who could have hit .300/.400/.500 by leaning on his ability to hit for contact and plus speed and turned him into a pull happy clown that can't cover the outer half

The numbers don't lie, Julio peaked as a rookie at 21. Highest batting average, highest on-base percentage, highest slugging percentage, and in turn highest OPS. It's been mostly regression since then and in his age 23 season he was basically Franklin Gutierrez 2.0
I think that what holds him back more than anything is he's just dumb. His at-bats are some of the dumbest we've ever seen. He gets ahead in the count and then swings at a pitch in the dirt, giving the advantage back to the pitcher. He was the final out last year in an at-bat where the Blue Jay pitcher didn't throw one single strike. We've seen the dumb things he's done on the basepaths, the ultimate classic being when he was on third and dodged a thrown bat on strike three and then stood there laughing while the Yankee catcher fired the ball down to third base and nailed him. I mean, who DOES that?
I like the guy's attitude, he's a fun player to watch when he's good, but he's just dumb and probably will never improve as a ballplayer unless he puts on a Yankee or Dodger uniform.

Upon further review, I suppose it can be seen that way as well. We'll erase this Beechism from the record.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 4:53 pmMaybe you need to check your reading comprehension...DavidGee24 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 4:48 pmThe Forum: "Topic Of Discussion - Julio should be a better hitter than he is"

Re: I fear Julio is forever ruined...
We can debate how much influence clubs have on how a guy hits. My opinion is it's pretty individualistic. Clubs will assist but it's really up to the player to chart their course. But on the other hand, how about pitchers? Clubs seem to have a lot more hands on approach with pitchers than hitters. Seems to me a pitcher needs to fit a much narrower model than a hitter

Which is why fairly often you see pitchers who have sucked for three or more years suddenly become lights-out. For example, Emerson Hancock. For three years he was close to being a five-ERA pitcher and this season until his last two outings (and the blame for much of the second one should go to Jose Ferrer) he's been dominant. You can tweak a pitcher's delivery, add a pitch, and he's a completely different pitcher. It's a lot harder to do with hitters.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 5:18 pmWe can debate how much influence clubs have on how a guy hits. My opinion is it's pretty individualistic. Or after being traded, hitters either succeed or fail. Pitchers tend to get traded and then can succeed. Get with a different pitching coach. There's a lot more coaching influence with pitchingDavidGee24 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 5:26 pmWhich is why fairly often you see pitchers who have sucked for three or more years suddenly become lights-out. I just find him boring. All sorts of talent, but seemingly plateaued as a good, not great, player. He's always having a great time though, which is fine. It's good to have a positive attitude and to be fair, maybe that's what he needs to do. I know we'd all like him to be more of a gritty, old school type, but people are different. You would think though, that he could occasionally show a more serious, competitive side of his personality.
