I was at the hospital today and having to sit in the waiting room for a few hours I watched Argentina/Egypt and it was a very entertaining match. Five goals being scored with Argentina erasing a two-goal deficit and winning the game in just 14 minutes.

Sady, this was an outlier. The sport would be so much better if they scored like they do in hockey (and an average game of 6-7 goals in 90 minutes is very reasonable) and soccer fans can argue all they want but they just don't know any better.

America is the oldest and greatest country on Earth while the only thing Belgium ever contributed to the world is waffles. USA! USA!
Stella Artois. I guess you don't understand beer?
Probably more than you understand jokes.
I only understand funny ones and I havent seen you post one in all of the history of this forum.

By the way hope the hospital wasnt anything serious like a humour transplant. Seriously, hope you are ok....

Wow, this thread actually is making you angry, I've read what you've said to others. Surprised to see it, you've been friendly to everyone up until now.

Sorry mate.

Didnt realise i was coming across that way. Criticising anyone's humour isn't fun is it? Everyone on this forum must have a tremendous sense of humour to follow the Mariners eh? But your first dig seemed fractionally unnecessarily given that I was just summarising 3 people's comments on a game that happened overnight for me. The context is important. But with hindsight I see the humour in that as well.

I dont mind the fun poked at soccer. But if anyone doesn't give a shit why comment? I steer well clear of politics section most of the time for that reason.

Maybe the "i dont understand jokes" was just something I bit at instead of laughing? I will credit you with your first gag hit in history now.

Quite right Darren.

I think the thread went off on a cultural tangent and DavidGee is right that it touched a nerve with me.

How about this as an observation. The World Cup is held every four years and the football family would do anything to be given the honour of hosting it.

That honour was given to Qatar last time and now the USA. It's fine if anyone doesn't like football, but why treat it like it's a tin-pot joke? It isn't.

We would love to host a Super Bowl at Wembley and would treat it with great respect. How about America doing the same with the World Cup?

Some of it is funny - go Jason! But some was more undignified including me throwing shade at DavidGee, who is a good guy —a HERO even—and for which I am truly sorry.

No worries Mike, as a lifelong follower of the game we call soccer and someone more in touch with world sentiment regarding the U.S. team than those of us living within its borders, your posts on the subject bring a valuable perspective and makes for a more interesting discussion. And your comments in defense of the sport seemed reasonable to me.

Yeah, for soccer. I can live with that.

It's like only being the understudy for your high school play.

Which is what the rest of the world thinks about the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL. A "World Champion" of a sport that only 1 country (maybe 2) plays

Except for me of course who loves America and its sport.
You may be right with most of the sports, but I must disagree with baseball.

I suppose so - I think the World Baseball Classic will really continue to grow over the next 20 years - would be great to see it reach a real pinnacle in our lifetimes.

By the way, I'm throwing up the Open Golf contest in the next day or two - keep your eyes peeled. Working on it now.....

Thanks for the notice.

I'll be heading to the local hospital for a procedure that will make me pretty non-mobile for a few days, but will participate if I can.
