I think I have asked this before about the All Star game. With 162 Mariners games to keep an eye on and all the sports for the dainty little fellas like Football, Cricket, Tennis, Snooker and Golf I never give it the blind bit of notice.

There just isn't room in my world. But I would be interested to learn about how big it is or was. Is it something you watched in awe as kids with your dad etc? Is it one of fond memories and does it still bring back the thick air of 60s, 70s nights in the "good old days"

Just one of those history lessons that I will have missed out on.

I never watch the All Star game. I think it's kind of dumb, actually, though it is nice for the players that get selected.

The All-Star game used to be bigger and more thrilling when I was a kid, back when there was not interleague play. It was the only time the National League played the American League except when the World Series was played.
From 1959 - 1962, the grand experiment of playing two AS games was tried, ostensibly to help build a pension for retired players when there was none or very little.
It exhausted some players, threw off pitching rotations, but did give fans a chance to see their heroes play in two different cities.

The AL victory does mean that the Mariners will have home field advantage in the World Series.

The top players in the league used to play all nine innings, but now they just get two ABs. Pitchers used to pitch two to three innings (in the old days the starters would go at least five) but now nobody goes more than one inning. It hurts the game when the latter half of the contest is full of fringe All-Stars. Last night's game had to have been a total bore.

I went to the 1979 AS game at the Kingdome when I was 12 with my Cousin. Back then as Rocky mentioned it was a fight to the death like it was a WS game.

Bruce Bochte, our Mariner hero got an RBI single to give us the lead but alas we lost. This iconic Dave Parker throw was one of the best most memorable plays in AS game history. Note the big flotation devices umps used to use for protection. I used to use one when a was a Little league ump at age 13-14. Both Parker and the catcher Carter are now in Baseball Heaven.
