Jerry today:

"We do have a clear flaw for facing left-handed pitching, and that’s something we’d like to resolve, although there are no really clear and obvious places we can fit those players on our roster, and there are no clear and obvious players who are available who can upgrade us in that way. The best players we can acquire are the players we have. We just need them to do the things that they have historically done."

Lol... I hate it when he says this shit knowing it's a lie.

Nats trade former consensus top 30 prospect in baseball Robert Hassell (part of the Juan Soto trade) to the Pirates for a bag of balls.

JP is a free agent in '27 and I doubt they re-sign him. Could very well send him back in the trade as a throw in to the Nats to finish out his contract so they have someone at SS to finish out the year (alongside some top prospects). That is what a team who cared about winning would do at least. The Nats could also have a use for JP on a future short-term deal while they wait for Eli Willits get there.

Before he was injured, the M's were looking at moving Donovan back to a OF/IF role.

If you can make a move to make the team far better, I think you break up the log jam.

Here's a trade:

M's trade Farmelo, Arroyo, Peters, JP, Raley to the Nats for Abrams and Orlando Ribalta.

Getting rid of Raley would mean you can move Donovan to RF.
There's no way the Mariner front office trades those three prospects when they're doing well, not to mention Ribalta is rather mediocre. I don't know if the Gnats feel like they're close, but if they do they'll hang onto Abrams. If not, then they'd probably be willing to listen to that deal but I couldn't see us putting that much prospect talent out there, even though most of us here probably think that prospect talent is very overrated.

I have read nothing new or noteworthy. The stuff we are all hearing is the same stuff that’s been discussed for the last 2 months. In short:
  • We need a right handed bat and a reliever. So does almost everyone else.
  • We have the number 8 farm system, so we have depth to use if we so choose. Only Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan are untouchable (they may be called up later in the season).
  • The M’s may finally trade from pitching depth. Of course Castillo is the one they want to be in the chop, but he’s the most expensive, he’s on the wrong side of 30, he has another expensive year left in his contract, and he has an ERA of nearly 5. So, yeah. There’s that. They should have traded him during the offseason.
  • All the armchair pundits want Wilson Contreras. But so does everyone else. Even if he was available - which I doubt he is since the Red Sox are raking it now - some evil empire like the Dodgers or Yankees will get him because they are willing pony the fuck up.
  • We have SS and 2B locked up for the foreseeable future, but we have a glaring gap at 3B moving forward.
  • Everyone is waiting for the post all-star break surge in Cal and Julio. And all of our problems will be solved once they figure out to hit again and Brendan Donovan comes off the IL. Hope springs eternal.
  • Dipoto is on record as saying they aren’t going to make any splashy moves before the deadline.
So yeah - let’s all just get used to the fact that nothing will happen, we wind up 4th in the division and 8 games out of a wild card spot.

Say it loud and say it proud … “there’s always next season.”

I'm not sure that's true. They've shown they're willing to trade top prospects for talent to help their current club compete.

While out of character, the comparable trade would be the M's trading Arroyo (no. 44) and Marte (no. 18) for Castillo with 1.5 years of service time remaining when they acquired him.

Not only that, but drafting Ace Reese and Jake Brown means they're probably on the same timeline as Farmelo, making him somewhat expendable. Same can be said for Arroyo given the IF battery of Emerson/Young for years to come.

Unsure what you mean by "nothing will happen." That hasn't been their deadline performance since before the rebuild. They've been pretty active at the deadline the last couple of years and I don't see that changing.

I don't know that it will be something earth shattering like Abrams... but again, a decent reliver and a player like Taylor Ward would do a lot for this team.

I think that we will end up with Ward. He hits lefties well, he gets on base, and he's one year removed from hitting 36 home runs. It's just a matter if the Oriholes will take Castillo off our hands or if they want prospects in return. Either way, Ward probably won't cost much.

Taylor Ward. I'll pass. He hit 36 HR's last year, on pace for 10 this year.
His baseball card says he plays 3B & LF. He subbed, not started, at 3B for two games in 2022.
He does bat righthanded, I'll give him that.
Rocky Colavito is a Hall of Famer in my book!

Their owner said they are listening.

But the answer is... he is only controlled for 2 more seasons and is having a breakout year. If you don't believe you can re-sign him or/and believe that you can contend over the next 2 seasons (the pitching is just dreadful), then you trade him at peak value with low control to land the best package you can.

And they could theoretically trade him to make their current roster more complete and add more depth to their farm for the future.

Hancock, Arroyo, Raley in a trade would give them a frontline SP... and 2x position players to slot at 2B and RF, areas where they've really struggled.
Only four games out of a playoff spot.
With 6 teams ahead of them in the mix.

They know they don't have the pitching to keep up.
They aren't trading him. I shall leave it at that.
