So is this trade supposed to make the Mariners better now or in the (distant) future?
This trade is addition by subtraction. We don’t need Castillo and confident that Anderson would provide better results rest of this year and next
I mean, freeing up $24 million next year?

That's a big free agent signing or 1 year of an extension for Gilbert?

That is HUGE.

1. It gets rid of their stupid 6-man rotation.

2. It removes far and away the biggest drain on their roster and blockade to promoting pitching talent on their roster.

3. It frees up $30M over the next 1.2 years.

4. It adds a guy who yes, has struggled this year, but had an ERA of around 3.20 the last 3 years and throws 100 mph.

5. It's far better than anyone predicted the M's would get back for Castillo without eating a shit ton of $$.
1. Thank God

2. Yes!

3. 80% of the season is 130 games. We have played 112

4. Yep and was need to partially equalize the money situation

5. Sox must have been so fucking desperate. Still can't believe it

6. Can't believe you didn't mention Smith who is an athletic Catcher that can play LF and is absolutely raking in AA after raking in high A. He is by FAR the best piece coming back.

Kind of an incredible deal for Castillo, getting rid of that money but also getting back anything useful in return. I'm surprised they didn't have to send money with Castillo to try and even things up. On the other hand, I'm continually surprised every year at the salaries given to mediocre starting pitchers in free agency.

I do suspect that Nolan Jones is a fraud though. He had that one good year in Colorado and has been on a steady decline ever since. But he's our fraud now I guess.

Hey best option against righties with Raley possibly done for. We just need a true 3b of the future for Kirby. We have no 3b going into next year. Jones should be better then Fairchild and has decent numbers just cant stay healthy

Dominguez the guy who served up the Granny to Suarez in the playoffs last year.

Donovan is 3B IF healthy but you are very right about the future at 3B. Nothing there at all.

Domingquez is owed $20M so we are only saving $10M He isn't great but not terrible. I love the trade. Kudos to Jerry as much as it pains me to say it.
He's owed $10.5M next year and probably around $2M for the remainder of 2026.

Castillo is actually owed $30M for the remainder of this year and 2027.

The M's saved about $18M in this trade.

That is unless I'm missing something and for some reason the teams trading for a player have to pay all of their salary despite 70% of the season being done... which I've never heard of.
I spaced on that but we are only 2/3 through the season so he is owed about $3M but whatever. Great trade.

Actually, there is a piece you all are missing in Castillo's contract. There is a vesting option for 2028 of $25mill that could be reached because Castillo could pitchn180innings. That makes it a possible bigger chunk of salary that the M's are dodging.

Well aware.

But no team in their right mind is letting him throw 180 innings.

Saw a post from the Ms on social media that said seattle is actually getting some cash from Chicago in the deal.
