Mariners’ subreddit turns into seafaring discussion board after 22-0 loss

I was watching this happen on Reddit last night. The first post that I came across, I thought it was a legitimate lost redditor, which we get sometimes on the Mariners sub, but then there was another and another. I thought it was pretty funny.

From the Seattle Times:

Mariners’ subreddit turns into seafaring discussion board after 22-0 loss

It’s through humiliation, sometimes, that we find out the greatest humor.
After the Seattle Mariners were dealt their greatest loss in franchise history, losing 22-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers, some fans couldn’t help but lean into the absurdity. Ripping a big ol’ dose of copium Tuesday night, fans got literal and turned the r/Mariners subreddit into a seafaring mariners discussion board.

After all, the M’s performance was so bad, Julio Rodríguez threw a ball into the outfield stands after he lost track of the outs during the nine-run eighth inning.

“Please remove the baseball posts, this is a real mariner sub,” one user wrote, posting a photo of a grizzled sea fisherman with the caption, “Tear this whole place down.”

One user posted a clip of Matt Damon’s Odysseus agonizing over the siren song while tied to the mast of his ship in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” with the caption, “I love being a Mariner!”

The honey-sweet temptation elicited by the siren song, promised only if you jump overboard? Undoubtedly, a Mariners’ World Series appearance. Doesn’t even have to be a win.

One fan asked for the Top 50 Mariners of All Time, but spouted off their pitches first to set the tone, musing, “I mean, Magellan, Leif Erikson, and Francis Drake definitely need to be on there, but who else deserves to be on the list of the 50 greatest seafarers of all time?”

It seems Josh “Naylor’s sailors” might have left the harbor.

Staying in theme, another user asked their fellow Mariners turned mariners, “Anybody else getting lucrative job offers from the ‘Strait of Hormuz’?”
They elaborated, saying, “I just got an offer to deliver oil from Kuwait to Shanghai for double what those jobs used to offer? Is there a reason why this job is so good this time around?”

You know the Mariners season is going down the drain when fans turn to the high seas for comfort.

“About to head out to the mariana trench. Anyone want anything?” one fan asked, offering to bring back “shrimp (any kind), supergiant amphipod, diatomaceous ooze.”

If the M’s season itself can’t be retrieved from the depths, sure, diatomaceous ooze has got to be the next best thing.

Another fan brought Marvel superhero Namor, the Sub-Mariner, into the discussion, asking some questions for a Magic the Gathering tribal deck recommendation featuring the aquatic King of Atlantis. One fan replied, saying, “Team is full of Sub-Mariners I swear.”

Maybe all the Mariners need this season is a little salt in the wound to turn this ship around.

Reminds me of a movie, Kevin Costner is known simply as, "Mariner".
Have you ever seen the Kevin Costner movie, Waterworld? Bad reviews but I like the movie.

Dennis Hopper (as Deacon) is the protagonist, is the evil captain of the tanker, later revealed to be the infamous Exxon Valdez.

Kevin Costner drops the (a lit stick of dynamite) into the fuel holding tank where an old man has been relegated to living his life in the tank, measuring fuel.

This seems a bit Marineresque to me.
