The bullpen needs to be more of a fortress but the Mariners think they can rebuild it every year and rely on the pile to fill spots 7 and 8, which means with injuries you're looking at 5 or 6 (or more) pile guys every year playing significant roles.

It matters depending on whether your offense has a higher or lower Runs Per Game than your staff ERA.

If my team's scoring 5 runs per game and my pitching staff has a 4.15 ERA like the White Sox this season, the win column looks a lot different than it does with the Mariners offense and their 4.24 ERA.

ERA matters a lot when your team can't score. Although, you won't be sniffing the win column much anyways in that case.

The White Sox have had 644 Runs scored against them this year (4.15 ERA).
The Mariners have had 652 Runs scored against them this year (4.24 ERA).

The White Sox are 75-70 and have scored 685 Runs.
The Mariners are 58-78 and have scored 577 Runs.

ERA's not our problem, and neither is defense. The White Sox have scored 4.72 runs per game to the Mariners 3.98. That's where the lopsided records come from. We can't score runs because Dipoto keeps stacking average players in a pile hoping they're taller than the Judges and Yordans of the world- they're not.
