I hope guys in here are right, that we will sign Clowney and trade for one of the Jacksonville guys, pair them with Irvin and Reed and some of our other young guys will develop. What I fear is we sign Clowney, and he is what he has always been...a disruptive guy that gets about 8 or so sacks. But his 8 sacks will lead the team, we will be bottom of the league in pass pressure and be complaining about our pass defense all over again.

At least we will finally have an elite O line!Michael K. wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:03 pmSome interesting names. Many who had more than three sacks last year too.D-train wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 5:06 pmEvan

But if they lose him and our best pass rusher is one of the misfits we have now? And they lose him over a couple of million? Will you think that couple of million would have been over payment?
That being said, if it is a health concern? Maybe Clowney won’t get a big payday anywhere. In that case he probably ends up here.
Michael - this isn't directed at you - so don't think it is. But isn't this exactly what we should be wary about? I am a Clowney fan, and I dismiss the whole 'he only got 3 sacks" bullshit, because it's just a stat, and 'stats' don't take into account his real value - he is an athletic freak who disrupts the game - requiring double teams and an opposing team to game plan for him. He is more than stats. Stats are for people who cannot watch, think and analyze for themselves. They are lazy and leave out all the context.
Risk v reward. That said, health is a factor and so is the cap. Too many fans want deals done now to appease themselves. That ain't how it works. And if Seattle 'just paid the man' and he goes down in game three - then what? NO one ever seems to factor in the risk in this. Which is astonishing since injuries are what derailed this team last year. The fact Seattle is the front runner while wading through the hyperbole speaks volumes about the quality of the front office - and their long-term strategic thinking. Clowney is not the difference between a SB run or not.
"This front office sucks! Just pay the man!" They "just pay" the man. Man goes down. "This front office sucks, why'd they pay him so much?"

Every f*cking time.

I am a big Clowney fan but am worried about health. I think if we had another decent threat coming off the other edge he would likely have double digit sacks......If healthy.

Yeah, I get it. I don't know what the monetary amount between over paying and not paying and losing him is!

I have not seen one single post saying " Just pay the man"auroraave wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 6:24 pm

And as far as going down week 3 ? You could say that about any player on any roster in the NFL.
Re: Hawks and Clowney might be close..
Even if we sign Clowney - have we even made the team better? Amazingly we had all that money to spend supposedly and aside from Olsen, whom I think is an upgrade but I know some don't, we basically just kept the team together and that was it. As far as the D goes it will be to see if Clowney can stay healthy all year as he played a lot of games hurt and missed some, and how much Irvin will make a difference, if any. We had an ok OLine and let almost all of them walk to restock them with ok players in return. We should have gone all-in on either the offense or D. We should have traded for Diggs or another legit WR via Trade/Signing, or did like Pro said and signed Clowney and traded for Ngaouke.
Here's hoping we draft well because this has been a very uninspiring offseason so far.

Re: Hawks and Clowney might be close..
My sentiments exactly. As I said earlier...every team in our division has won the division and advanced to the NFCCG more recently than we have, and two others have been to the Super Bowl more recently than we have. The Cards were a Cam Newton Super Man season away from making it three for three in Super Bowls. So, why is it that everyone just thinks that because we do something it must be the right thing? The Cards added the best receiver in the NFL and the 49ers added a first round pick by getting rid of one of the five stud DLinemen they have....which is honestly probably four more than we have. I will call Irvin and Reed each a half to get us one!Lamda wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 8:32 pmEven if we sign Clowney - have we even made the team better? As DT so painfully pointed out a few months ago, if it hasn't been for a dogshit Detroit team and an Eagles team with a 45 year old QB and a WRing group lead by a college QB? We might not have one single playoff win since the miracle comeback against Green Bay. So, why does everyone just automatically assume that we are in the right?
Our last two first round picks barely played as rookies...yet we all think that we will just save this team in the draft. Hell, not that long ago our best draft pick was a PUNTER! Needless to say I am worried. Not that we will suck, I believe we will contend. But we will contend because of Russ, not because we have optimized the ability to surround him with talent. I sure hope I am wrong, but really...I just posted this on another topic, but how is this team right now better than the one that in December and January could only manage a win against a Panther team that had quit on the season and two wins against a beat up Eagles team?
The Cards are better, the NFC Champs certainly haven't gotten any worse, and their draft pick is far ahead of ours. Hell, cutting Gurley has freed up cap space for the Rams. We signed Olsen, Irvin, a handful of backup O Lineman and re-signed Reed.
