For some time now I have said David G or Peter T. Now? I think DT might get to keep his money! Who'd a thunk it?

Yeah if the one loss is vs. the Astros we still probably won't make it.

Well the ridiculous dream of the playoffs is officially over once again. 19 seasons and counting. Now eclipsing the original drought from 1977-1995 that at the time seemed unimaginable. David Gee officially in the driver seat I would say with Peter and I in the wings.

and the White Sox make the playoffs before the Mariners like i was willing to wager. Its interesting how their rebuild began after trading away Fernando Tatis. Its also interesting in terms of their off season FA acquisitions being panned by some here

"By some here?" lol Nice work with the passive aggressive shot. Too bad it was inaccurate given I panned that them for spending on FAs after losing 100 games after the 2018 season. In 2019 they won 72 games.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 1:31 pmand the White Sox make the playoffs before the Mariners like i was willing to wager. But congrats to them for their first winning "season" since Bush was in office. Took a 60 game season to pull it off.

passive aggressive?...I was thinking more bpj actually, he is the one pushing how teams need to invest in a single major talent and then surround them with scrubs, believe this last White Sox off season in particular was presented as a case in point of poor spending, and yeah, thought you were basically in agreement. But go ahead and keep playing your dime store psychological card when you have nothing better to play. Yup, lets see if the Mariners can finally pull of making the playoffs before we are all in our graves...

If you were "thinking more bpj", why didn't you come out and straightforwardly say "bpj"? The White Sox shouldn't be a surprise given the fact that over the last three years they had prized prospects Eloy Hendricks and Luis Robert, developing.... ahead of the Mariners two outfielders, Kelenic and Rodriguez.... we are just a couple years behind them...I'm not sure this "60 game season" means much anyway, except arrested development for the Mariners prospects... We are presently in a tougher division and unfortunately the Mariner organization.... Manager, philosophy, broadcasting, analysts, draft strategy, etc... is pretty much unproven and pretty much a joke. We are in new territory, actually a rebuild, but there's every chance the M's will rush things and fuck it up, and continue to draft poorly....If we waste another top draft pick on a college pitcher this year..if we continue with a losing manager.. you will be in the grave before you see a playoff...we need a consistent philosophy, profession manager, and patience...Donn Beach wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 2:38 pmpassive aggressive?...I was thinking more bpj actually, he is the one pushing how teams need to invest in a single major talent and then surround them with scrubs, believe this last White Sox off season in particular was presented as a case in point of poor spending, and yeah, thought you were basically in agreement. Before you go celebrating...
It's working out decent for them over 55 games. Lol.
Keuchel just came off the DL now, his value over a full season? We'll never know... but I still wouldn't have signed him to that contract. They had to because they were making a push and waited to the last minute to fill in.
Mazara was the exact type of trade I would be after, (not a free agent) has been worth .2 WAR
Encarnacion has been worth 0 WAR. At least it wasn't long term, right??
Grandal is a stud. Still not sure I would have vacated either Nola or Murphy to add the contract. But, in the White Sox situation, maybe it was hard to find a decent catcher.
So they were 2 for 4 and Keuchel has already been on the DL? I'm not too sold on the idea of adding one good player and 3 geezers, no.
I'm fine with the Jose Abreu type moves.
But. No. I absolutely would not have waited until the last minute to add because then you end up with big contracts for old guys.
I would have added the best player I could, maybe two, every season (including this one, hence my push for Cole) depending where there is a true vacancy. The expensive contracts end up staggered for a sustainable model going forward and you don't end up with Encarnacion and end of career guys. Or, if you do, at least you already had their prime.
Felix didn't kill us, not adding around him did. For example.
In my opinion, the White Sox have succeeded despite questionable moves much like the Mariners did the year Dipoto took over. Except, at least all of their moves didn't implode like Dipotos.
My model is 5 players making $25 million and a bunch of Moore's, Lewis's, Kelenic's, etc.
When one contract falls off, you add a new great player using those funds.

Re: $50 wins prediction contest
My model is to draft high school position players in the first 3 rounds every year.... pitchers later.... you can trade for pitchers with promising position players.... When you have a solid defensive/offensive team that's affordable.... you can go out and sign two top of the line free agent pitchers.... ie.... the old AZ diamondbacks who signed Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.... the Astros with Gerrit Cole and Justin Verlander.... or just one to anchor a rotation... Max Scherzer with Nationals, Jon Lester with the Cubs, Zack Grienke with the Dodgers...
