Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
Mariners pride themselves on "thinking outside the box" which is why our organization has a history of abject stupidity...... this looks like another Lorena Martin experiment.... god damn...
Re: 2020-2021 Hot Stove Thread
Agreed, and Musgrove missed time, only had about 40 innings. Would probably be a fine fit for him. Grab one other bounceback guy and the team could surprise us.D-train wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 1:02 amAND it might be a lot easier to trade for an SP and only let them pitch once a week than convince an FA worth his salt to agree to the training wheels program.bpj wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:21 pmI think Musgrove could be a solid number two for a couple seasons. Just entering his prime, under control for two years, not on the hook for 6 at $20/M each.
I don't know. I think he's being underestimated, but only time will tell with that also. He could be another guy things never come together for, but at least its two years for a comparatively low cost. In my opinion he's better than Foster, but probably equally under the radar before he broke out.
It's exactly the type of chance I would be taking instead of paying in free agency for too many years.
And the only way to add an ace right now is probably Bauer. I'd take both for two years with a big grin.

You're welcome. My offseason plan keeps evolving as you may have persuaded me to alter Sunday's plan ... or not,D-train wrote: ↑Mon Nov 16, 2020 11:12 pmIts a unique idea and I applaud your guys' creativity. Just think you might overthinking it for Musgrove and seems to fly in the face of of the stars and scrubs philosophy that I have embraced. Well I guess we got a scrub in the form of Palanco.Would love to hear what others think.
Thanks again for posting your plan, Harmony.
One-time Seattle property Drew Smyly on Monday signed a one-year, $11 millon contract. Compare the stats of Smyly and Pittsburgh righthander Joe Musgrove, who is three years younger than Smyly:
2020 DS 26.1 IP, 3.42 ERA, 126 ERA+
2020 JM 39.,2 IP, 3.86 ERA, 116 ERA+
... then compare Musgrove's MLB career stats with Smyly's over the same period (2016-2020):
DS 315.2 IP, 5.25 ERA, 82 ERA+
JM 496.2 IP, 4.33 ERA, 96 ERA+
Smyly posted better numbers earlier in his career before missing significant time with injuries.
Musgrove carries risks ... but so does the retenton of Dylan Moore.
Recent dicussions of Joe Musgrove:

I chuckle when I notice that my offseason plan for the Mariners includes the acquisitions of five players from a 2020 Pittsburgh Pirate club that posted baseball's worst record this year.
Be well.

Wow, I can't believe Smyly got that deal in this economic climate after only pitching 26 innings.

Smyly, 31, had a 3.42 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) for the Giants last season. He struck out 42 batters in 26 1/3 innings, with a career-best 37.8% strikeout rate and 14.35 strikeouts per nine innings, the highest K/9 IP rate of any pitcher who made at least five starts in 2020.
one year $11mil seems pretty low risk“Drew was someone specifically that we had our eye on and that we were very high on,” Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. “We looked at him even last offseason as well. He started, in our minds, trending up that last month with the Phillies in ‘19, and then he took another step forward in this past year in terms of his stuff. When he came back from the finger injury, his last four outings were really strong.”

Guessing we will be taking even less risk unless JD finds himself a soft tossing lefty reliever that he falls in love with.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:06 amSmyly, 31, had a 3.42 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) for the Giants last season. Ugh. Please don't ever mention soft tossing leftys in this forum ever again.... we don't need another HoRam pukefest. Jamie Moyer doesn't count, he was a brilliant magician on the mound.D-train wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:19 amGuessing we will be taking even less risk unless JD finds himself a soft tossing lefty reliever that he falls in love with.Donn Beach wrote: ↑Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:06 amSmyly, 31, had a 3.42 ERA in seven appearances (five starts) for the Giants last season. I’ll tell ya this: I’d take Musgrove and put him in the rotation to replace Kikuchi in a New York minute.
The Smyly deal, I think, now slots Taijuan at $10M.
