This needs to be said: if Ichiro had started his career in America he obliterates Pete Rose's hit record. He was as good in his rookie year in Japan at 20 as he was in his final season there seven years later. We're talking over 4,500 hits if he skips Japan altogether.

i would bring that up in terms of his hof creds, he was given a really late start. What a great collection of players we had as fans. I think that's the problem today, we probably are not seeing that again

If you remember Ichiro’s swan song in Tokyo against the As? It was shown live over here mid-morning and I watched the game. It went to extra innings and I got to thinking exactly what you said - this seems like an odd quirky team and now I watch as much as I can.

They told his story in a retrospective piece and you could see the adulation he had achieved.

How weird, if there was no Ichiro there would probably be no mostonmike. Another part of his legacy.

Retired a bit late. 2011-17 he was mediocre at best. If he had changed his approach to trying to draw more walks once he slowed down he would have been more valuable. He was disciplined and intellectual in his preparation and the parade of unfocused, unmotivated and just plain dumb players we've endured since he left really brings that home.

I really liked Kazuhiro Sasaki, the other Japanese guy on that team. Seemed like the ultimate teammate.

.757 career OPS.

His age 37-43 seasons dragged his OPS down. If he plays here from 20-27 he's well over .800 for his career.

Also, his WAR suffered because he played right filed. Put him in center field with his defense and you can add about 2.0 WAR per year to his totals. Same with Roberto Clemente.

and I've been meaning to bring this up for a long time so why not screw with an Ichiro thread, what's the deal with ops to begin with? I will give you obp, that's significant, in fact its been estimated to be as much as three times as significant as slugging. Is there anything more juvenile than slugging? A single gets a one, double gets a two, a triple gets a three? Seriously, a triple is three times more valuable than a single? The thing doesn't make sense, I will take 20 doubles over 15 triples any day

That is exactly why Sabermetrics are better than simple stats. Also singles are double counted by OPS given they are included in both OBP and SLG.

Triples are not worth 3x singles or 1.5x doubles.

Well, on-base% by itself is a pretty lame stat as well. It values all hits the same. So one stat off-sets what is deficient in the other. Slg% overvalues extrabase hits, ob% undervalues them. Sure there better stats but ops ain't bad.
