I always liked Arod. Never blamed him for leaving for the money. What, he should have stayed with this organization of losers like we have to? Good for him for getting paid, imo.

Yeah, the only thing I held against Arod was coming out and asking them not to trade him as if there was hope he might consider re-signing. If it wasn't for that it really wouldn't have bothered me.

I wonder if he gave them a chance to match the offer...

They did make him an offer. It just never was going to happen. And I'll defend that contract. It was a good contract, Arod ended up earning it. And the Rangers giving it made sense. They were attempting to build a destination theme park baseball event with Arod as the focus. If anything Boras and Hicks were ahead of their time putting the idea together. It's really exactly what the Dodgers did with Ohtani. Nobody is calling Ohtani greedy or the Dodgers crazy

And the fact he said it wasn't about the money, it was about winning and then he went to the last place Rangers. Imagine if they didn't idiotically call him up in 1994-1995 and he wasn't an FA until AFTER 2001 season. Maybe we win the WS but maybe we don't sign the FAs we did and don't even win 100 games and lose in the first round. Who knows.

lol He knew they weren't going to come close to that offer. I bet we barely offered him over $100M.

He didn't have a real father figure so I bet that was Boras for him at the time and you can bet your ass that Boras was in his ear telling him he would be insane to turn down a quarter billion dollars.

LOL The Dodgers have won 2 WS titles with Ohtani.

The Rangers won 72, 73 and 71 games from 2001-3 with ARod and then after he got traded they won 89. Probably not a good analogy.

I'm speaking to why Hart gave him the contract. Nothing about it worked but the idea is exactly how baseball evolved. It's the same argument that's used for why the mariners shouldn't be cheapskates isn't it

That's the comment I believe. That's the one I think that's always kinda stuck with me. Probably not really a big deal
"When you sign a four-year deal, you don't want to be there three years or three-and-a-half years. The ball's in their court, and they have to do what they please, but I want to be a Mariner,"

Tom Hicks signed him. Hart traded him. I realize Owner vs. GM. Hilarious Chicken Little quotes from 25 years ago. LOL
15. Quotable
After the deal was announced, apocalyptic forecasts about the sport's future abounded. A sampling of opinions:

MLB executive Sandy Alderson: "I'm kind of stupefied by the numbers. They're beyond alarming. ... Clearly we are in a crisis situation."

Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo: "I never thought there would come a day when a player would cost as much as you would pay for a team."

Braves general manager John Schuerholz: "There's no way in the world we were in position to be at that level. Nor did we have the desire to do that."

Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker: "The sooner we run this up the flagpole, the sooner we get to D-Day and a catastrophic event."

Boras: "We don't need revenue sharing. We need intellect sharing."
