A potential trade target for the M's

Gotta agree with this. I don't see them sending either Colt or Cole back to the minors. And Donovan will be playing when he gets back without a doubt. That's 2 infield spots and a DH right there. The only logical move would be to DFA JP. and they don't have the balls to do that.

Or just DFA Refsnyder and give Schmitt the occasional start at 3B outside of DH duties.

It's really worth thinking about, in my opinion. Adding a solid to plus right-handed bat at a skill position, even as a backup, makes a lot of sense. Schmitt could rotate between 1B, 3B, and DH.

He definitely can't be brought in as a backup, he's earned regular playing time. There's no reason to have him at third with Emerson and Donovan on the roster. The big contract we gave Naylor creates a problem at first as telling Naylor he's going to be DHing frequently will probably go over like a fart in a luxury box.

If we're going to get a right-handed bat, it's got to be a full-time DH unless something happens to Robles, Canzone or Raley and an outfielder is needed.

Yep just need to clear the decks a bit and even Jerry has been will to do that in July when his trash additions haven't panned out.

I think you would bring him in as the everyday DH and then he would backup at the other positions. I'm assuming Canzone would go in the trade or would be moved in a different deal.

Again, that wouldn't go over well with him. Unfortunately, these guys are human beings with pro athlete egos.

With Cal and Donovan coming back from injury, I'd be surprised to see us trade for more offense unless we trade Canzone for a right-handed bat which isn't going to be Schmitt. If we want a big right-handed bat it would have to be Canzone and one of our better (not best, but better) prospects like Montes. My guess is that in July we'll be looking more at bullpen arms.

I was originally thinking the best option for third/first base was Alec Bohn, But with Emerson up you want him everyday and given the cost for Bohn it's probably not worth it. Other similar targets might be Christian Walker, Rhys Hoskins, or Jake Burger. I suppose we could look to the outfield where the best right hand options are Julio, Randy, and Robles. We don't need Refsnyder. Robles is a great defensive late inning replacement, extra inning bunter or base stealer coming off the bench, but we might find a better right hand power bat than Refsnyder. Also, Garver could go when Cal returns. The M's have been linked to righty OF/versatile bats in the past for platoon help (e.g., vs. lefties). Internal options like prospects (Colt Emerson, etc.) or current pieces (Raley/Refsnyder) help, but an external RH power add would give more punch.
It's so fkkkng complicated, this roster construction, I. don't really know what to do.

If you bring him in as the every day DH, then one of your 4 infielders has to go to a bench role. Donovan can play the outfield against Lefties but you aren't going to bench Raley and his 161 OPS+ against righties. I suppose you could kind of have rotating day offs so everyone gets a day off every 5 days.

Day 1- Schmitt DH, Donavan 3b, JP SS, Young 2b, Emerson Bench
Day 2- Schmitt DH, Emerson 3b, JP SS, Young 2b, Donovan Bench
Day 3- Schmitt DH, Emerson 3b, JP SS, Donovan 2b, Young Bench

Yeah not to mention Bohm is a negative WAR noodle bat and would barely be an upgrade over Refsnyder...
