we have 8 edge guys and 1.5 inside players. Al Woods was the only one last year that gave us any shot in short yardage situations, the second best being Shelby Harris. Add Poona in there, and that's 1000 lbs of proven veterans replaced by an older Reed, a 5th rounder, and an UDFA.

Our pass rush should be better, even our overall run defense could be, but there are going to be a lot of goalline and 3rd and 1s that will be gimmes for the other teams.

Can't you also argue that, if they were 'anchoring' the worst run defense in the league - they are clearly replaceable? Your point is legit, it is a concern, but I think the bigger picture is that they have a ton of lineman - lots of depth and rotation - that is great over the long haul of the season, and also this offense is set up to score a TON of points, theoretically, and that secondary should, also in theory, create more turnovers. Yeah, front seven is a concern, but the rest of the team may be able to ove come that. they are really only one or two bodies away from being quite formidable - and those guys we let go were all past their prime. Growing pains are likely, but probably for a more complete roster overall that is younger, faster and hungrier (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Can't you also argue that, if they were 'anchoring' the worst run defense in the league - they are clearly replaceable? all could be valid arguments. The defense SHOULD be better overall. I'm just saying in the specific case of losing Woods and Shelby Harris hurts the interior of the line, and has not been replaced. In the NFL, replacing bodies with other bodies isn't equitable. Until we see what the rookies can do against NFL competition, we don't know if we're getting Frank Clark or Aaron Curry. We know what we'll get from the veterans.... and what we got from them was the ability to sometimes stuff short yardage situations.

The run defense issue wasn't because of the DTs (well, not largely anyway), it was because Barton let RBs thru, and the DBs missed tackles on the back end. There were so many ridiculous big plays that should have never happened, especially the first half of the year. I think Bobby Wagner instantly fixes most of that, simply by him knowing where to be, and where to put everybody else.

Everyone agrees the defense sucked but then when talking individual players every single one is mentioned in a "he was pretty good or decent or not bad or maybe we can convince him to resign light". HOW can it be possible that all those guys were decent but our run D was HORRID???

easy. First, I'm only sad about losing Woods, because he had a unique skillset.

Cody Barton was absolutely ridiculously bad for the first half of the season, and barely adequate the second half, and he was the one setting the defense! In this defense, one player fucking up snowballs into catastrophe, and that was Barton.

Al Woods was pretty much useless as a pass rusher, but one thing he did was clog the middle. Short yardage - all those 3rd and 2 and 3 - is where he excelled. With nobody of that size in the middle, those 3rd and 2s become automatic first downs.

We don't have a real NT now. It's like a basketball team with a bunch of guards but no center - sometimes it works, but against certain teams the matchups will overwhelm. That is concerning to me.
