I think ERA+ and OPS+ is a flawed metric.

They give M's hitters way too much credit for sucking at T-Mobile and conversely hurt M's pitchers.
Last year... for instance... the M's pitching staff had an ERA+ of 104 and the offense had an OPS+ of 104.

No. Fucking. Chance.
Basball Savant has a ton of data but what do you make of these...

You asked if he was "good" last year.

Idk about all that.

I think it's tough to say he wasn't good when he hung a 3.61 ERA and tossed 175 innings.

To say that's league average is hilarious.

More or less... Baseball Reference is giving pitchers in Arizona and Colorado a .85 per 9 run buffer when compared to a starter in Seattle.

I sincerely doubt Ryne Nelson or Ryan Felter come to Seattle and hang a 3.61 ERA purely b/c of the park.

Perhaps, but what i was wondering is why he stopped mixing up his pitches as much when he came to Seattle.

I don't know, we watched it play out with guys like Marco.

2023-
Home ERA: 3.77
Away: 7.17

2022-
Home: 3.58
Away: 4.84

I wouldn't trust any pitchers stats in T-Mobile to tell any kind of story. They all look good here.

The M's coaching staff seems to like their starters to throw a lot of fastballs.

Again, it's hard to argue against like a 3.35 ERA as a starter in an M's uniform.

I don't think Castillo was elite or even very good.

I just think he was "good" last year.

Marco was always pure dog shit.

B/c the style of pitching is so different I'm not sure it's comparable. A pitcher like Marco relies on balls in play so park suppression will always help him. I'm not sure that's the same for Castillo.

Here's a fun thought experiment... so T-Mobile is supposedly the most base hit suppressing park in baseball since its inception.

Knowing this, would Ichiro have hit .400 and put up close to 300 hits in a season if he played in Arizona for his career?

Question: Why are the Mariners keeping Dylan Moore on the bench? Seems they have an answer at 2B and don't want to use him. He's a Gold Glove winner and can hit, so what's the deal?

Castillo had a 4.25 ERA on the road last year.
MLB wide road ERA was 4.18 and overall MLB ERA was 4.07.
Have him pitch all his games in a neutral stadium and I really believe he is about an average pitcher.
